Roots

Our names have profound roots and rhythm when we combine the syllables. Throughout the centuries, human beings have found a way to express their emotions, through songs and music. In this unit, we explored the body as a tool to create this goal. We learned different rhythms to create a rhythm choreography.

Latin American Rhythm and Games

Throughout history, games and sounds have played a significant role in learning and developing imagination. Using the body to create games and songs, we can help students express themselves and improve their logical thinking, concentration, and memory. In addition to this development, they are understanding simple and sophisticated rhythms.

Indigenous music from Mèxico

Music has powerful effects on our brains and bodies; music can act as a strong memory cue and a powerful catalyst for sparking ideas. Using our bodies and voices, we can create beautiful songs with movement. This workshop helps to boost creativity using Mesoamerican themes into a tapestry of colorful legends.

ASSEMBLIES

Breezes of the Caribbean

The flute and percussions of Corazón Sur create a colorful ambiance, evoking scents and breezes of the Caribbean, the melodies of the indigenous tribes, and the heartbeat of the African drums. Students have the opportunity to travel through Latin America, exploring rhythms ranging from Son Jarocho of Veracruz to the traditional Cumbias of Colombia, while learning about the geography, language and instrumentation of various regional genres.

BALAMCOATL

Balam, meaning jaguar in Maya, and coatl, meaning serpent in Nahuatl, unite to weave Mesoamerican themes into a tapestry of colorful legends, drawing each audience member into the story through participatory song and dance. We take students on a journey of movement and sound from the South to the North of México, using traditional costumes and instruments from each region. The wind and percussion instruments bring the audience down a magical path, leading back to the jaguar’s home: the jungle.
